Biography of Joachim Löw
As coach of the German national team , Joachim “Jogi” Löw took the hearts of all football fans by storm. At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, after extra time in the final against Argentina, he led the national team to their fourth world championship title – a summer fairy tale for German football fans!
Soccer field instead of a boring office job
Joachim Löw started his football career as an active player. Even as a small boy, he spent all his free time on the field, but after completing his high school diploma he decided first to train as a wholesale and foreign trade merchant. But his talent was recognized at TuS Schönau and later at FC Schönau. The change to the sports friends Eintracht Freiburg should be the next step on the career ladder.
As a player, Jogi Löw got around a lot
Löw’s professional career began in 1978 in the second Bundesliga at SC Freiburg – a club to which he would always return. For the 1980/81 season, the striker moved to VfB Stuttgart in the first division, where he spent most of his time on the bench rather than on the pitch. His next stop was Eintracht Frankfurt before returning to SC Freiburg. A short trip to Karlsruher SC followed, before he was hired again at SC Freiburg. After four years in the second Bundesliga in Freiburg and a total of 83 goals – to this day he is Freiburg’s record goalscorer – Jogi Löw finally went to Switzerland and played for the clubs FC Schaffhausen and FC Winterthur.
The striker becomes a coach
In Switzerland, Joachim Löw finally switched sides. From now on he was no longer on the football field, but as a coach on the sidelines. After coaching a few small clubs, he went to VfB Stuttgart as the new coach and in the coming years gained further valuable experience as a coach both nationally and internationally at the clubs Fenerbahçe Istanbul, Karlsruher SC , Adanaspor, FC Tirol Innsbruck and Austria Vienna.
Jogi Löw becomes federal jogi
With all this experience under his belt, Joachim Löw took the next, very significant step in his career in 2004. As an assistant to Jürgen Klinsmann , he took over the support of the national team before becoming head coach in 2006. The balance of his successful career: a third place at the 2010 World Cup, a world title at the World Cup in Brazil 2014 and victory in the Confed Cup in Russia 2017.
Lucky in the game, unlucky in relationships
With all the successes that Joachim Löw can celebrate professionally, his marriage fell by the wayside. In 1986 he married his wife Daniela, with whom he had been in a relationship for nine years. Then, in August 2016, the surprising news: The federal lion and his wife have separated. But the two still seem to get along well, because an official divorce is not planned.
The end of an era
And not only privately, but also professionally, the former national coach has to reorient himself. A few months before the 2021 European Championship, Löw announced that he would resign after the tournament. His legendary tenure as coach of the German national team ended after a 15-year tenure with a total of 198 games after the unsuccessful round of 16 match against England on June 29, 2021. Jogi’s successor was former Bayern coach Hansi Flick.
