On 9th August, 2022, Kenyans went to vote for their leaders in six ballots. While electing governors, Kenyans were voting for their deputy governors too. A deputy governor will take over the county leadership upon the death of the current governor. In that way, a by-election is avoided.
The official duties of a deputy governor in Kenya include:
- serving as Principal Deputy to the Governor,
- serving as Acting Governor in the absence of the Governor from the County or the disability of the Governor, or
- becoming Governor in the event of the Governor’s death, resignation or removal from office via impeachment
