Professor George Magoha is a Kenyan consultant surgeon, academic, academic administrator, and technocrat. His full name is George Albert Omore Magoha. The current CS for education in Kenya was a Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nairobi from 2005 until 2015.
He was born in Gem, Siaya County in 1952, so he is 70 years old. He is married to Dr. Barbara O Essien Magoha, obstetrician-gynecologist, since 1982. The two met in the University of Lagos. She is working in Kenya as a consultant obstetrician and gynecologist at Kenyatta National Hospital and as a lecturer at the University of Nairobi. She holds a Master of Medicine (Obstetrics and Gynaecology) from the University of Nairobi. She has a son with Professor Magoha.
Their son, Dr. Michael Magoha, is an alumnus of Strathmore and Brookhouse School. He graduated from the University of Nairobi’s School of Medicine in 2009 and furthered in neurosurgery in 2011.
Professor Magoha was appointed chairman, dean, and principal in the College of Health of Sciences and later deputy vice-chancellor at the University of Nairobi, in quick succession. In 2005 was appointed the vice-chancellor of the UoN, having scored the highest among the applicants. In 2016, he was appointed the Chairman of the Kenya National Examination Council by President Uhuru Kenyatta. On 1 March 2019, he was nominated as the Cabinet Secretary for Education in the Kenyan Cabinet and was sworn in on 26 March 2019, replacing Amina Mohamed.
