They might be chucking bangers and club hits, but that most certainly does not mean they don’t have other talents and abilities. Quite the opposite, actually! It’s no secret that Kenya’s music industry is composed of some of the best brains the country has to offer.

From medical doctors, engineers, and architects among other highly regarded professionals, these celebrities had the brains, but music called them, and they obliged.

And if you know anything about the music industry in Kenya and how artists are compensated, you’d understand that for these guys, the music comes straight from the heart!

Here are some of Kenya’s highly educated musicians.

Frasha

The P-Unit member fancies himself as one of the top brains in the music industry, commonly referring to himself as Dakitare. Other than producing music, the Dakitare hitmaker is also good at matters of human health, he is a medical doctor.

Frasha graduated from Kenya Medical Training College where he majored in physiotherapy and specialized in pain management, according to reports. The singer worked as a doctor at the Aga Kha hospital until 2011 when he resigned to join the music.

Since then, he has revealed that though he finds a lot of fulfillment in being a musician,n he is still a doctor, and that was highlighted when COVID hit and he went back to practice, opening a clinic next to Aga Khan called the Doctor’s Park. According to him, the pandemic proved that education still is and always will be the best thing to fall back on.

Wahu

Singer Wahu Kagwi is one of the most learned musicians in Kenya. The beautiful songstress studied Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Nairobi where she majored in Mathematics.

The Sweet Love hitmaker also holds a Master’s Degree in Communication. She said she got the Master’s degree because her line of work demands communications.

Nameless

Just like his wife Wahu, Nameless is an academic genius. He started his formal education at Nairobi Primary School and he furthered his studies at Strathmore Secondary School.

After High School, Nameless enrolled at the University of Nairobi to study towards his Architecture Degree.

Maureen Kunga

Maureen Kunga is another brainy singer who is even qualified to vie for the Chief Justice job, (or could be qualified in a few years) courtesy of her education as a law student.

The graduate of Nairobi University was admitted as an advocate to the High Court in 2014. On her education, Maureen revealed that she was a devout law student and loved going to school, even though she never had a favorite law teacher or anything of that sort.

Moses Ssali, also known as Bebe Cool is one of Uganda’s most famous celebrities who has been consistently relevant for more than 20 years as a musician.

Although a lot is known about Bebe Cool’s current life and status as a musician, businessman, husband and father, not much is often said about Bebe Cool’s education and background in general.

Today we take a look at Bebe Cool’s educational background and reveal the schools he attended and what his greatest educational level is.

But before we delve into Bebe Cool’s education, it should be noted that the artist was born to a prominent family. His father Jaberi Bidandi Ssali is a retired politician who besides founding the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) served as Minister for Local Government and also ran for the presidency during the 2011 general election but lost.

Bebe Cool, whose real name is Musa Saali was born on 1 September 1977 in Kampala, Uganda. He comes from a family of 10 children, all raised by a single mother. His father abandoned them for his other family. Bebe Cool is now 45 years old.

Despite growing up in a poor home, Bebe Cool received at least his O- level and A- level education. He started his schooling at Agha Khan Primary School before he moved to Kitante Hill School for his secondary education. He then joined Makerere College School. Bebe Cool now aged 45 has been in the music industry since 1977. He transformed the reggae & ragga scene in his home country but he kick-started his music career in Nairobi. Bebe Cool was part of the now-defunct Ogopa DJ’s, a production house and record label. He teamed up with the famed Kenyan duo Necessary Noiz and formed the East African Bashment Crew. The group produced one album which carried two hit songs “Fire” and “Africa Unite”.

Bebe Cool was unfortunate not to have a complete family like he’s built. His mother raised him and his nine siblings after his father, Jaberi Bidandi Ssali left them for another family.

Jaberi Bidandi Ssale was a wealthy man. He worked with the government but he never supported Bebe Cool, his mother and his siblings. Bebe Cool trekked to and fro school while his mother ran a small business with which she used to support her family.

A brush with death

In 2010, football fans packed the Kyadondo Rugby Club to watch the world cup finals between the Netherlands and Spain. The second half of the match was just starting, right after Bebe Cool’s performance when bombs exploded in different parts of the ground. The musician survived the incident.

In the same year, Bebe Cool was shot by drunk police identified as Anthony Achikan. This left him hospitalised for several months with serious limb injuries. Three years later, a Kampala High Court awarded him sh 14 million for damages suffered. The musician initially demanded Sh 29 million to cover his loss of income when he was hospitalised.

Bebe Cool is a snitch

Two Nigerian artists Temilade Openiyi and Omah Lay along with their manager Muyiwa Awomiy were arrested in Uganda for breaking COVID-19 rules. Temi alleged that Bebe Cool called the police on them. She stated that she found him in the DPO’s office relaxing and laughing with them. She further alleged that Bebe Cool bribed the police for their release.

Bebe Cool did not respond to the allegations. However, a Facebook post he made raised eyebrows. He questioned the invitation of Nigerian artists over Ugandans who were struggling because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Temi and Omah were in the country and performed at an event at Speke Resort in Kampala.

Support Wine’s arrest

Bebe Cool made news when he supported the arrest of Robert Kyagulani alias Bobi Wine in 2020 ahead of the general election in 2021. Bebe Cool who publicly supports the leadership of Yoweri Museveni, said that Bobi Wine’s supporters were chaotic, which resulted in the attack of a police officer. In the aftermath of his comments, Bebe Cool was booed off the stage. He responded by urging the crowd to use the ballot box to voice their concerns.

Comparisons with Diamond

Bebe Cool shut down comparisons between him and Tanzanian superstar Diamond Platnumz. He took a swipe at Diamond on several things. First, he claimed that Diamond buys YouTube views to make his songs seem popular.

Secondly, Bebe Cool alleged that Diamond hired four cars for baby mama Tanasha Donna and not bought them as thought.

Thirdly, he also alleged that he has produced bigger numbers in concerts than Diamond can ever produce.

The Kokonya hitmaker who is known for her sweet voice, well-written lyrics and bold sense of style has made her name well-known in the male-dominated space and is currently a force to be reckoned with both in Uganda and across East Africa.

Namakwaya Hajara Diana, aka Spice Diana, was born on the 23rd of October, 1996 in Mpererwe, Kampala.

Where does Spice Diana come from?

Spice Diana was born on 23 October 1996 in Mpererwe, Kampala. She was raised by a single mother, Beat Nanatale after her father abandoned them. Spice Diana’s real name is Hajarah Diana Namakwaya. The musician has two siblings.

Rema Namakula is a recording artist and singer. She started out when she was young and has gone on to perform on some of the best platforms on the continent. Here’s Rema Namakula’s biography.

Rema Namakula was born on 24 April 1991 in Lubaga Hospital, Uganda. She is the lastborn child in her family. Her late parents were Hamida Nabbosa and Mukiibi Ssemakula. She lived with them in Makuba District until their demise. Rema Namakula grew in a staunch Muslim home.

Bebe Cool

Moses Ssali a.k.a Bebe Cool started his career right after completing his secondary studies in 1997 while based in Nairobi, but eventually moved back to his country and continued with music.

Bebe Cool started in the industry with the name Big Size, and eventually changed his stage name. The musician worked on growing his name as a brand by delivering different types of songs and it later caught the ears of everyone in the country through his hits Fitina and Mambo Mingi.

In 2004, Bebe Cool remade Born In Africa and his remix was considered to be one of the greatest songs in the history of African music. The song was voted number 15 out of fifty anthems for the African continent.

In 2020 he revealed that he has worked on a collaboration with Nigeria’s Yemi Alade and said he will work on more songs with another rising Nigerian singer.

Eddy Kenzo’s story begins on a low point and crescendos to a glorious tale. The musician is now a ray of hope to millions of people. Kenzo was many things before his big break in the world of music. For 13 years, he lived on the streets, sold water, was a stadium ball boy, did welding, sold milk, played soccer, sold drugs and even did construction work to make ends meet. Despite that, today he is one of the most sought-after musicians in the Afrobeat genre. He is also a man with a big heart, giving hope to the poor street children of Uganda through his acts of philanthropy.”

In several interviews, Eddy Kenzo has always used the phrase ‘zero to hero’ to describe his story. Eddy Kenzo was born to a poor Ugandan gateman and a refugee mother from Rwanda who died when Kenzo was barely five years old. This forced him to go to the streets and fend for himself. It took him more than 10 years to meet with his father and brother again.

Kenzo’s father couldn’t take care of him and his brother. He worked as a gateman and lived in the tiny gateman house. In one of the interviews with Mama Maria Prean, Eddy Kenzo reveals heartbreaking interactions with his pauper father.

“My father was a gateman at World Vision. When we met him he told us “you are not allowed near this gate. My employer said my workstation is too small and cannot accommodate extra persons, so just stay from a distance. I will meet you there.”

“He told us he can only give us a small posho, we eat from a distance and after eating, we need to go because he doesn’t want his boss to know he has kids. So all the time we visited him that is what we did,” said Eddy Kenzo.

Eddy Kenzo would later move to Kampala, Uganda’s capital by hiding under the bus seats of a soccer academy team where he was a ball boy. With the hope of being a footballer, Eddy Kenzo joined Sports Club Villa academy hoping his star will shine brighter in that field. He would mostly sleep under the stadium seats every night. To supplement his needs, Kenzo Eddy would even peddle drugs.

However, he did not make it into football but in music. Mike Wine, the brother to Bobbi Wine, opened doors for him when they met in 2008.
