The Rolex is one of the most famous and sought-after wristwatches in the luxury segment – but also one of the most copied. But how do you recognize an original Rolex?

Many watch enthusiasts dream of owning a Rolex. Hardly any other wristwatch is considered a status symbol as much as the Swiss branded product. But the high-quality and coveted watches are in the upper price segment, so it is not surprising that Rolex is one of the most counterfeited watch brands in the world. But how can a fake be distinguished from the original?

Characteristics of an original Rolex

In order to have a chance of distinguishing an original Rolex watch from a counterfeit, you need to look closely at the watch to see the characteristics of this luxury watch. First of all, every Rolex has an engraved serial number, which is located on the side of the case. This number can be seen when you remove the bracelet. The individual digits should be clearly separated from each other and characterized by fine lines. In the light, the engraving appears like a diamond engraving on the original.

Also, take a close look at the bracelet. The bracelet of a Rolex has a smooth surface, the distance between the links is the same. Counterfeits, on the other hand, are usually poorly processed and appear uneven. The weight can also be a decisive feature: if the wristwatch is light, this indicates a fake.

Also take a look at the back of the watch case, as a Rolex watch usually does not have any engravings in this area. However, there are some exceptions, such as the Sea Dweller models, women’s watches from the early 1990s or limited Rolex watches. In any case, find out in advance whether the model you are targeting is one of the exceptions that has an engraving on the back.

But knowing the characteristics of a Rolex can of course only increase the chance of spotting a fake. If in doubt, you should always consult an expert to assess your wristwatch.
